Shattered Woman Oil on Canvas

Shattered woman is an oil painting that came to exist entirely by accident. Katie was working on a sculpture series that visualised the experience of ever reaching for a goal. The sculpture would display a dystopian idea that nothing will ever feel enough, one goal after another, always reaching for more or better.

Upon completing the ceramic part of this sculpture, which was a woman reaching her whole body upward, hanging dearly onto her desires, Katie dropped the fragile sculpture. It shattered to the ground and Katie subsequently felt herself shatter too. The emotions of this event felt so strongly significant to Katie, that she felt it more powerful than the very piece she was working on.

Shattered Woman was created. A passionate photoshoot followed with incredibly fortunate lighting on a gleamingly sunny day and the oil painting emerged, eternalising the moment.
